Freshman second baseman Cole Weaver (Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) led Saint John's with six hits (6-for-14) in the MIAC Tournament as the Johnnies went 3-0 to earn their second consecutive MIAC Playoff title, and third in the last five seasons, May 12-14.
Weaver finished a double short of the cycle in the 11-4 win over Saint Mary's that clinched the title. His solo home run in the sixth inning, his second of the season, gave SJU a three-run lead (7-4) a half inning after the Cardinals cut into the Johnnies' 6-2 lead with a pinch-hit, two-run homer.
He currently leads the team runs scored (39), on-base percentage (.506) and stolen bases (8), and is second in batting average (.394).
For the second consecutive season, Saint John's is headed to Wisconsin for the NCAA's eight-team, double-elimination La Crosse Regional this Wednesday-Saturday, May 18-21. The Johnnies (28-12 overall) begin the double-elimination tournament as the fifth seed against fourth-seeded St. Scholastica (31-9 overall) at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at Copeland Park.
