Saint John's senior guard Alex Schmitt (Waconia, Minn.) shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the field, including an even 50 percent (8-for-16) from three-point range, as he scored 22 points in each of SJU’s games last week.
He started the week with 22 points in the 85-73 loss to No. 6 St. Thomas Wednesday (Jan. 13). Facing the possibility of a three-game losing streak, SJU (11-3, 6-3 MIAC) bounced back with a 91-68 win over Augsburg thanks to Schmitt’s 22 points, his eighth 20-point game of the season. He made a career-high six three-pointers in the victory and the 22-point game enabled him to jump four spots to 25th on SJU's all-time scoring list (1,074 career points).
Schmitt leads the MIAC in field goals (97) and three-pointers (41) made, and is second in scoring, both overall (18.6 ppg.) and in league play (18.8 ppg.).
The Johnnies play host to Gustavus Adolphus for a 7 p.m. game this Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Sexton Arena.
