Saint John's junior forward Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) scored a pair of goals as SJU soccer went 1-0-1 this past week. He gave SJU a 1-0 lead only 1:04 into the match in the 1-1 tie at Carleton Sept. 26 and tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal 11:25 into the 3-0 win over Augsburg Sept. 29. Newman's tally against Carleton was SJU's fourth scored in the second minute of a game since 2002.

Newman has four goals in his last eight games. Four of his six career goals have been game-winners.

The Johnnies are now 7-1-2 (3-0-1 MIAC), their best start since 2005 (8-1-1 record), and are 6-0-2 in their last eight matches since the 3-0 loss at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Sept. 5.

SJU makes a brief return to non-conference action with a 2 p.m. match this Sunday, Oct. 4, at Wisconsin-Superior.
