Saint John's University sophomore defensive back Mike Bonynge (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) made two critical plays in the Johnnies’ 10-3 win over St. Olaf last Saturday. On first-and-goal from the SJU 5 with 13 seconds left in the first half, Bonynge (bonn-idge) intercepted an errant pass in the end zone and returned it 66 yards to the St. Olaf 34 with 0.9 seconds left. Gliadon then kicked a school-record 52-yard field goal to make it 10-3 in favor of SJU at the half. The Oles had one last chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. On second-and-10 from the SJU 20, Bonynge broke up a pass intended for Antonio Jennings near the end zone. Senior defensive lineman Jeff Bohlman (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) then sacked the quarterback on the next play to end the game. Bonynge ended the game with five tackles, all solo, and his first career interception. He was named the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.
The Johnnies are idle next weekend and return to action Saturday, Nov. 7, against Augsburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis.
