Saint John's senior goaltender Tyler Nelson (Champlin, Minn.) went 1-1 with a 1.01 GAA and a .968 save percentage (60 saves) in non-conference play over the weekend.
He made 29 saves, including a handful on one-on-one situations, in the 2-1 loss to Wisconsin-River Falls Thursday night (Jan. 5), but bounced back with 31 saves to record his first collegiate shutout in the 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday (Jan. 7).
Saturday night's shutout was the Johnnies’ first of a WIAC school since Jan. 6, 2006, nearly 11 years to the date (Adam Hanna ’06 vs. Wisconsin-Eau Claire). Nelson has a 1.31 GAA and a .957 save percentage (89 saves) in his last three starts.
The Johnnies (8-5-2, 3-2-1 MIAC) return to conference play with a 7:30 p.m. contest at St. Olaf (3-10-1, 1-5-0 MIAC) this Friday, Jan. 13, at the Northfield Ice Arena. SJU returns home to host the Oles for a 7 p.m. tilt on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the HBNHC in St. Cloud.
