Saint John’s sophomore forward Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) played a role in all three goals as the Johnnies went 2-0 in conference play last week.
In SJU’s 1-0 win at Gustavus Adolphus Oct. 12, junior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) slotted a pass up the field to Boerjan, who burned past the defender. The Gusties' John Anderson tackled Boerjan from behind in the box to give SJU a penalty kick, earn a red card and leave the home team a man down for the remaining 70 minutes of the match. Senior Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) scored on the penalty kick, which proved to be the game-winning goal.
Boerjan tallied a goal and an assist in the Johnnies’ 2-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead Oct. 15. He ripped a shot near the top of the box off a Cobber defender and the deflection went directly to Bruckbauer, who smoked a shot to the far post for his third tally of the season, only 31 seconds into the match. The goal was SJU’s fastest since Ben Bahr '03 found the net 16 seconds into SJU's 6-1 home win over St. Olaf on Nov. 1, 2000.
The Boerjan-Bruckbauer combination found the net again 2:27 later. Senior Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) fed Bruckbauer, who chipped a nice pass to Boerjan on his left and the sophomore did the rest. Boerjan zoomed past the Cobber defender and trickled a shot to the far post for his fourth goal of the season.
The Johnnies (5-6-3, 4-2-1 MIAC) return to conference play with a 3:30 p.m. match at Hamline this Saturday, Oct. 22, in St. Paul.
