The two-time defending MIAC champion in the 100-yard freestyle, Saint John's senior Kenny Bergman (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) opened his 2016-17 season last Saturday (Nov. 5) with wins in both the 50- (22.30) and 100-yard (48.87) freestyles at the Hamline Invitational. He was named the MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week Nov. 8 for his performance.
He was also a member SJU's 200-yard freestyle relay, which took first, and the 200-yard medley relay that tied for second.
SJU won seven of the 13 events and posted 21 top-three finishes to take first place with a total of 385 points, followed by the host Pipers (300), Macalester (237) and Saint Mary's (154).
The Johnnies return to St. Paul for the Macalester Invitational at 1 p.m. next Saturday, Nov. 12.
