Saint John's junior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47) from the field and averaged 22.3 points and 6.7 rebounds as SJU (12-4, 8-3 MIAC) posted a 2-1 record to climb into a tie for first place in the MIAC last week. He was named the MIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week Jan. 23 for his performance.
He led SJU with a career-high 25 points on 10 of 15 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season in the 87-81 win over then-league-leading Bethel last Monday (Jan. 16) and followed that performance with 19 points, despite being called for his third foul of the game with 7:41 remaining in the first half, in the 86-84 overtime win Jan. 18 at Hamline.
Weiss led all scorers with 23 points, his eighth 20-point game of the season, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four steals to end the week Jan. 21 at Carleton. SJU's other four starters combined to shoot 17.4 percent (4-for-23) from the field in the 73-58 loss.
He currently leads the MIAC (all games) in made field goals (122) and shooting percentage (.616, minimum 70 field goals) and is third in scoring (18.4 ppg.). He is averaging 21.8 points and 5.8 rebounds, while shooting 59.7 percent (43-72), 60.0 percent (3-5) from three-point range and 87 percent (20-23) from the free-throw line over the last two weeks (five games).
The Johnnies play host to St. Thomas for a 3 p.m. game this Saturday, Jan. 28, in Sexton Arena.
