Saint John's junior pitcher Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, .118 opponent batting average and nine strikeouts (to zero walks) in nine innings pitched (two appearances) last week.
He started the week with a one-hit, complete-game shutout May 3 at Saint Mary’s. He registered a career-high eight strikeouts and did not issue a free pass. The Cardinals’ lone hit was a two-out single in the first inning.
Wiggins surrendered two unearned runs in two innings of relief as SJU completed the sweep of St. Thomas May 6 to win its first MIAC regular-season title since 1998 and earn the top seed in this week's MIAC Tournament.
He has allowed 11 hits and no earned runs, while issuing 14 strikeouts and only one walk, in his last 17.1 innings pitched. Wiggins is currently 5-2 with a 2.20 ERA, .226 opponent batting average and 30 strikeouts (to two walks) in 41 innings pitched this season.
The Johnnies (31-6, 16-4 MIAC) open the double-elimination tournament, their ninth consecutive appearance, against the lowest seed at 3 p.m. Friday, May 11, at CHS Field in St. Paul. SJU's opponent will be determined Thursday, when No. 3 plays No. 6 (3 p.m.) and No. 4 faces No. 5 (7 p.m.) in a pair of elimination games.
