Saint John's senior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) averaged a double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 70 percent (14-for-20) from the field as No. 20 SJU opened its season with two wins over the weekend at St. Cloud State.
He totaled seven points and five rebounds in only six minutes in the first half and finished with his 11th career double-double, 20 points and 11 rebounds (in 23 minutes), in the season-opening 94-71 win over St. Scholastica Nov. 17. CSS was picked to win the UMAC in its preseason coaches’ poll.
Weiss led all scorers with 18 points, including 10 in the second half as SJU erased a one-point halftime deficit, and fell one rebound short of his second consecutive double-double in the Johnnies’ 73-67 win No. 18 at Division II SCSU.
He is now 32 points shy of becoming the 36th Johnnie in school history to reach 1,000 for a career.
The Johnnies travel to face Wisconsin-La Crosse (2-0 overall) for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
