Saint John's junior co-captain Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) recorded three points (2g/1a), including the game-winning goal to give SJU a split with Saint Mary’s last weekend (Feb. 10-11) and keep its postseason hopes alive.
He tied Friday’s game at 2-2 with 2:02 remaining in the eventual 3-2 overtime loss and struck again late, with 2:27 left and on the power play, to give SJU a 5-4 win over SMU Saturday night.
SJU’s team leader in assists (16) and points (25) last season entered the weekend against SMU with only one point (an assist in Jan. 7’s 1-0 win over UW-Superior) in his previous nine games, including none in the last six. Sekesi now has 10 points (5g/5a) in six career games against SMU.
The Johnnies (11-9-3, 6-6-2 MIAC) play host to No. 11 Augsburg for Senior Night at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. SJU enters the final weekend series of the regular season with 20 points in the conference standings, two behind Concordia-Moorhead, which visits Bethel for two games in Blaine.
