Saint John’s junior guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) led all scorers with a season-high 28 points, thanks in large part to a 6-for-8 showing from three-point range, and grabbed six rebounds in No. 21 SJU’s 77-74 win over Hamline Dec. 13. He was named the MIAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week Dec. 18 for his performance.
Stokman hit a number of clutch shots down the stretch with the game hanging in the balance. Down four (61-57) with 8:41 to play, Stokman hit back-to-back three-pointers to give SJU a two-point lead. Although the game was tied three more times, SJU never trailed the rest of the way.
Ahead by one (72-71), Stokman made an off-balance jumper off the glass as the shot clock expired with 35 seconds remaining and made both free throws with two seconds left to seal the win.
SJU (7-1, 4-0 MIAC) wraps up its non-conference schedule against Wisconsin-Superior (3-8, 1-3 UMAC) at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, in Sexton Arena.
