Saint John's junior third baseman Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) batted .345 (10-for-29) with two home runs, two triples, a double, six runs scored and 12 RBI as SJU opened its season with a 3-3 record in Tucson, Ariz., last week. He was named the MIAC Baseball Player of the Week for his performance March 14.
He started the season 1-for-11 with a triple in the first two games (22 innings) March 10, only to go 9-for-18 with two home runs, a triple and 12 RBI over the trip's final four contests. He clubbed the two homers and collected eight RBI in the doubleheader sweep of Wheaton (Ill.) March 11. Schiebel batted .474 (9-for-19) against fellow righties and .462 (6-for-13) with runners in scoring position.
An American Baseball Coaches' Association All-Midwest selection honoree last spring, Schiebel started all 42 games at third base and batted .365 (62-for-170) with a team-leading 16 doubles and 20 extra-base hits in 2015. His 16 doubles were one shy of SJU's single-season record of 17 set by Ryan Roder '97 in 1997.
The Johnnies return to action with 10 games over spring break March 20-25 in Fort Myers, Fla. SJU is scheduled to play six games, all 9-inning contests, the first three days of the trip (a total of 54 innings).
