Saint John's junior guard Alex Schmitt (Waconia, Minn.) shot 51.3 percent (20-for-39) from the field and averaged 27.5 points in 32 minutes per game as the Johnnies went 1-1 to open MIAC play last week. He led all scorers with 22 points and made all nine of his free-throw attempts, including six in the final 1:39 of the game, in the 79-76 win over Concordia Dec. 3.
Schmitt followed that up with a career-high 33 points on 14 of 26 shooting (5-for-10 from three-point range) in the 77-69 loss to No. 5 St. Thomas Dec. 6. He tallied 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting in the first half alone, including a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to give the Johnnies a 35-34 halftime lead.
He currently leads the MIAC in scoring (19.8 ppg.) and free-throw percentage (100.0), among those with 16 attempts or more.
The Johnnies (3-2, 1-1 MIAC) play host to No. 20 St. Olaf (5-1, 1-1 MIAC) for their fifth consecutive home game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, in Sexton Arena.
