Bolstered by a strong second half, Saint John's junior running back Sam Sura (South St. Paul, Minn.) recorded his third 200-yard rushing performance of the season with 205 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries in the 29-19 win at previously-unbeaten Gustavus Adolphus Oct. 18. He ran for 154 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries (7.7 avg.) in the second half alone.
The 205 yards enabled Sura to become the first Johnnie since Kent Crowley in 2002 (1,411 yards in 14 games) to cross the 1,000-yard mark and the first to do it during the regular season since Matt Malmberg in 1994 (1,102 yards in 10 games).
Sura currently has 1,080 yards and 10 touchdowns on 161 attempts (6.7 avg.) in six games (see below), and is currently second in NCAA Division III in total rushing yards (1,080), is third in rushing yards per game (180.0) and fifth in all-purpose yardage per game (193.5).
The Johnnies (5-1, 3-1 MIAC), who are ranked as high as No. 21 in the latest D3football.com poll, play host to Carleton as part of Family Weekend this Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville.
