Athlete Awards Athlete of the Week Choose Awards Type All Athlete Awards Athlete of the Week Jose Alvarez Award Athlete of the Week Week Of 11/11/2013 Sport Swimming and Diving Bio View Full Bio Saint John’s University freshman swimmer Jose Alvarez (North Bay Village, Fla./Belen Jesuit) won three individual events and another as a member of the Johnnies' 200-yard medley relay (1:38.76) in his first collegiate meet Nov. 9 at the Hamline Invitational. He claimed first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.60), 100-yard butterfly (53.78) and 200-yard individual medley (2:01.89). All three times would have placed him in the top 16 at last year’s MIAC Championships. He was named the MIAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for his performance. SJU opened its 2013-14 season with a first-place finish out of five teams at the meet. The Johnnies recorded 20 top-two finishes, including wins in 10 of the 13 events. Of the eight individual wins, six were by freshmen. The Johnnies return to action in two weeks at the Gustavus Adolphus Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 23. The meet is scheduled for noon at the Lund Center Natatorium in St. Peter.
