A week after coming up big in the season-opening win over Wisconsin-River Falls, junior defensive lineman Matt Workman (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels) tilted the game once again in SJU’s favor in the victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire Sept. 14 with eight tackles (seven solo), two forced fumbles, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries (one on third-and-five, the other a play before an SJU interception).
On third-and-goal from the SJU two-yard line, Workman stood up the Blugold running back short of the goal line and then proceeded to rip the ball out for a turnover. With UWEC driving late, Workman forced the game-sealing fumble on the SJU nine-yard line with 1:10 remaining.
Last week, Workman sacked the River Falls quarterback on second-and-seven, sending him to the sideline for the backup, who he dropped for a three-yard loss on the next play to force the punt that led to the Johnnies’ game-winning field goal with two seconds remaining.
The Johnnies (2-0 overall) open MIAC play at No. 2 St. Thomas (2-0 overall) this Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.
