Saint John's University junior running back Stephen Johnson (Mahtomedi, Minn.) posted career highs in attempts (38) and rushing yards (196) in the 27-24 upset of nationally-ranked St. Olaf last Saturday. The 38 attempts are the third-most in single game in school history, while the 196 yards tie him for eighth. Johnson was responsible for 11 of the Johnnies' 15 rushing first downs on the afternoon. He tied the game at 17-17 with a 27-yard touchdown run to open the second half, and then gave SJU its first lead of the game with a six-yard touchdown run near the end of the third quarter. He also added four yards on one catch for a total of 200 yards from scrimmage. He needs exactly 100 rushing yards to crack the Johnnies' top 15 list and 12 attempts to move into 10th in school history.
He was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
The Johnnies (5-4, 4-3 MIAC) end the 2011 season at Hamline (0-9, 0-7 MIAC) this Saturday, Nov. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Klas Field in St. Paul.
