A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Shorthanded Saint John's (13-4-3 overall) upset then-No. 6 Augsburg 2-1 in the MIAC quarterfinals on Monday night (Nov. 3) in Minneapolis.

The loss was the second of the season – and second to the Johnnies – for third-seeded Augsburg (16-2-2 overall). SJU handed then-No. 3 Augsburg its only loss of the season, 5-2, earlier this season on Sept. 30 in Collegeville. The Johnnies are now 3-0-3 in their last six meetings (8-2-3 in the last 13) against the Auggies.

The 11-to-9 advantage failed to slow SJU – which played down two men on the field for the game's final 15:08 due to two red cards – and senior forward Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers), who scored the game-winning goal with just 4:37 remaining. Bowman was one of three Johnnie attackers positioned at the top of the box for a long free kick from senior defender Foster Conlin (Mooresville, N.C./Mounds View) and headed the ball in above the Auggie defense and goalkeeper on a well-timed jump. The goal was his third of the season, 16th of his career and fifth game-winner.

Freshman midfielder Eli Ryan (Victoria, Minn./Minnetonka) gave the sixth-seeded Johnnies a 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season in the 38th minute. After a long free kick from Foster Conlin that bounced off an Auggie, today's MIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week – sophomore defender Thomas Theising (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) – played the ball wide to Ryan. He danced through two defenders and launched a ball into the top right corner of the net.

The tide turned, however, when freshman midfielder Olin Franzwa (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) was issued his second yellow card of the game for a red from just outside the SJU box with 16:51 left. Freshman goalkeeper Cole Hanson (Urbandale, Iowa) made the initial save on the ensuing free kick but Ceazar Daniell put away the rebound to tie the game at 1-1.

Freshman defender Gabe Franzman (Bettendorf, Iowa), like Franzwa, was tagged with his second yellow card 1:43 later (15:08 mark), leaving SJU with only nine men on the field.

The Auggies came close to tying the game late, as Eric Riera hit the crossbar early in the 87th minute and Hanson made a sprawling save of Christopher Plaza Alvarado's desperation shot with three seconds left. Hanson made a career-high 12 saves to improve his record to 8-2-1 on the season.

Augsburg posted a 32-20 margin in shots (13-9 on goal) and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks. Each team received four yellow cards.

SJU'S MIAC PLAYOFF HISTORY: The Johnnies are making their 14th appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, which were established in 2003, and 11th in the last 13 seasons. SJU is 8-12-2 in the conference tournament, including a 7-10-1 record on the road. Thursday's semifinal is the fourth meeting between the Johnnies and Oles in the MIAC Playoffs, all in the semifinal round: Nov. 5, 2014 (W, 4-1 in Northfield); Nov. 4, 2015 (L, 0-1 in Collegeville); and Nov. 3, 2021 (L, 1-2 in Northfield).

A LOOK AT THE OLES: St. Olaf (15-1-3 overall) brings a 13-game unbeaten streak (11-0-2 record) into the MIAC playoffs. The Oles fell one spot to No. 4, while Augsburg jumped four spots to No. 2 in Tuesday's United Soccer Coaches poll that included up to Sunday's games. Junior defender Ryan Bechtel leads the team in assists (12) and points (30), while sophomore forward Jack Soares touts a team-best 11 goals for second with 22 points. Each of them touts three game-winning goals. Senior goalkeeper Jack Hobday is 9-1-1 with a 0.88 GAA and a .811 save percentage (43 saves) in 12 games, while sophomore Beckett Carlson is 6-0-2 with a 0.71 GAA and a .808 save percentage (21 saves) in nine contests.

LAST MONTH: Then-No. 16 St. Olaf scored a goal late in the 85th minute to top SJU 1-0 earlier this season on Oct. 4 in Collegeville. Tustin Todd turned the corner up the left sideline and sent a cross into the box that Jack Soares chipped to the far post and in for the game-winner and his sixth goal of the season for STO with 5:04 remaining.

SJU nearly gained a 1-0 lead with a wide open net in the 76th minute, but freshman forward Lisle Cherwien's (Mound, Minn./Orono) shot went over the net.

Hanson made a then-career-high 10 saves in the loss.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 34-23-5 against the Oles since 1973, including a 15-11-2 advantage in Northfield. STO, however, has won each of the last seven meetings overall (nine of the last 12).
