ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 16 Saint John's golf fired an opening-round total of 292 (+4) at its spring invitational on Saturday, April 27, at Territory G.C. (par 72) in St. Cloud.
The Johnnies are tied with Gustavus Adolphus for first place out of 17 teams. No. 23 St. Thomas is third at 295 (+7), followed by Concordia-Moorhead (+11, 299), Manitoba (+12, 300) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (+13, 301).
Sunday's pair of shotgun rounds begin at 9:30 a.m. at Monticello C.C. (par 71) in Monticello.
The reigning MIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week, junior
Matt Wahl (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) carded six birdies and 12 pars for a 6-under par 66. He posted five birdies on the back nine and leads the field of 97 golfers by four shots.
The 6-under par performance was the Johnnies' best since Dennis Granath '13 totaled a 6-under par 66 on Sept. 14, 2009, at the Bemidji Town and Country Club (par 72). Josh Sherlin '05 owns the school record of 7-under par, which he set Sept. 8, 2003, also at the Bemidji Town and Country Club.

David Schneider (Albany, Minn.) is tied for third overall with an even-par 72, while senior
Jack Koehler (Eden Prairie, Minn.) is tied for 27th with a 76 (+4).

Matt Lutz (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) led SJU Blue, which is tied for 10th at 308 (+20), with a 74 (+2) to sit in a tie for 17th. Sophomore Max Labine (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and freshman
Isaac Burgess (Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area) followed with a 75 (+3) and 76 (+4), respectively.
