ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's baseball ran its win streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep at Hamline, 4-3 and 8-6, on Tuesday, April 11, at CHS Field in St. Paul.
SJU (15-7, 6-2 MIAC) battled back from a three-run deficit and scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning of game one's 4-3 victory. The Johnnies built leads of 5-0 and 6-1 in game two, but Hamline (10-16, 3-5 MIAC) picked away and tied it before SJU plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
The Johnnies batted .304 on the afternoon but mustered only one extra-base hit. Eight different Johnnies drove in a run on the day.
HU's Collin Olstad broke a scoreless tie in game one with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning, the first earned runs allowed by sophomore
Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) since his first start of the season April 1 (a streak of 26.1 innings).
SJU tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman outfielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls), the reigning MIAC Player of the Week, gave SJU its first hit of the game to lead off the fourth and senior third baseman
Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) reached on an error with one out. Junior first baseman
Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) put SJU on the scoreboard, 3-1, with a solid RBI single and a wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. The wild pitch proved to be costly as sophomore designated hitter
Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) made it 3-2 with an RBI groundout and senior outfielder
Blake Langerud (Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) tied the game with a beautiful RBI bunt single.
Freshman shortstop
Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) coaxed a walk to start the seventh inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior catcher
Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.). Junior second baseman
Brennan Swan (Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace) singled to left, placing runners on the corners for SJU, and Ulrich followed with a go-ahead, RBI single.
Dickmeyer went the distance, allowing the three runs on five hits to improve to 4-0 on the season.
The Johnnies jumped on Nate Rubbelke for four runs on five hits in the first inning of game two and added another in the second.
Sophomore
Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) hit a batter to load the bases with two out in the bottom of the fourth before Jacob Picht hit a two-run single to cut the Johnnies' lead to 6-3. The Pipers smacked back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-4 and end Auger's day.
Sophomore
Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) relieved Auger and induced a flyout and a groundout, but that was enough for HU to make it 6-5. Picht, who finished 4-for-5 in game two, tied the game at 6-6 with a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior
Alex Kendall (St. Cloud, Minn./Saint John's Prep) relieved Wiggins to start the bottom of the seventh and posted a 1-2-3 half. He earned the win, improving to 3-2 on the year, thanks to the Johnnies' two unearned runs in the top of the eighth.
Ulrich's speed forced a throwing error by the Hamline pitcher, which brought around Schleper from second base for SJU's seventh run. Ulrich advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) to end the scoring.
Junior
Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his second save of the season. He ended the game by starting a 1-6-3 double play.
Auger allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out three in four innings in the no decision.
Ulrich went 4-for-9 with four runs scored on the day and extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Jackson, Swan and Terres collected three hits apiece.
The Johnnies return home to host Minnesota-Morris for a nine-inning, non-conference game at
3 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in Collegeville. The game was originally scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch but was bumped an hour earlier due to the weather forecast (rain).
