Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score (suspended)

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's baseball suffered its second consecutive one-run loss, and fourth of the season, 4-3 in game one at Carleton on Wednesday, April 6, in Northfield.

The second game was tied 3-3 entering the top of the 11th inning when play was suspended due to darkness. The game will resume at a date and time to be determined. The statistics for the suspended game are not added to the season stats until the game is completed.

SJU (13-7, 1-2 MIAC) entered the doubleheader batting .336 on the year but mustered only four hits in game one and batted .213 (13-for-61) across both contests in the frigid temperatures Wednesday. The pitching staff for Carleton (6-14, 3-0 MIAC), meanwhile, took the field with a 9.13 ERA and a .361 opponent batting average.

Hayden Tsutsui started the day batting .558 on the year and recorded three hits (in eight at-bats) on the afternoon, two of which were home runs in key situations.

His leadoff, solo homer in the bottom of the seventh tied game one at 3-3 before Griffin Bolte tripled in a one-out walk to post the win.

Cody Bohlman put the Knights on the scoreboard first with his third home run of the season in the second inning and an unearned run extended the lead to 2-0 in the third.

SJU scored a run with a walk and three consecutive hit-batsmen before senior Mike Stegora (Red Wing, Minn.) roped a two-run double off the right-centerfield wall to give the Johnnies a 3-2 lead. The double was the Johnnies' lone hit (1-for-8) with runners in scoring position in the game.

Sophomore Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) started the game and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked four. Sophomore Ted Christian (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) entered the game after Tsutsui's game-tying home run and took the loss.

Tsutsui came through again for Carleton, this time in the seventh inning of game two, with a two-out, three-run homer on a 2-2 count to break the scoreless game.

SJU answered with three runs to tie the game in the next half inning. Junior third baseman Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) walked to start the eighth and advanced to second on a single from senior shortstop Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.). Senior first baseman Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) followed with an RBI double, his 14th of the season off the centerfield fence to erase the shutout. Senior catcher Gabe MacDonald (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) brought in the second run with an RBI groundout and sophomore Pat Lloyd (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) tied the game with a pinch-hit, RBI single with two outs.

SJU stranded 13 men on base so far in game two, including runners on second and third with one out in the top of the 10th inning.

Freshman Cameron Jurek (Foley, Minn.) allowed the three runs on eight hits in eight innings for the no-decision. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Sophomore Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) allowed a hit and struck out one in two innings of relief.

SJU travels to play Saint Mary's for a 1 p.m. doubleheader this Saturday, April 9, in Winona.
