NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's baseball moved into second place in the conference standings with a 5-3 win in 14 innings at Carleton, the completion of a suspended game, on Sunday, April 17, in Northfield.
The game was tied 3-3 entering the top of the 11th inning back on April 6 when the game was suspended due to darkness. Carleton won the first game of the doubleheader in walk-off fashion, 4-3, back on April 6.
SJU (19-8, 7-3 MIAC) broke the stalemate with two runs without a hit in the top of the 14th inning. Back-to-back errors gave the Johnnies a pair of baserunners before freshman second baseman
Cole Weaver (Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from freshman outfielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) plated the game-winning run and a wild pitch during the next at-bat ended the scoring.
The Johnnies preserved the game by throwing out two runners at plate Sunday. Carleton (9-18, 5-3 MIAC) had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the 11th, but a botched squeeze play gave SJU an easy out at the plate. Then, a nice relay from left-fielder
Pat Lloyd (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) to senior shortstop
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) to senior catcher
Gabe MacDonald (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) cut down Carleton's Hayden Tsutsui at the plate for the final out of the 12th inning. Tsutsui was attempting to score from first on a double off the bat of Griffin Bolte.
Sophomore
Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) pitched five innings of scoreless relief, including three on Sunday, to earn the win. He is now 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 26.2 innings (eight appearances and one start) this season.
Senior
Marcus Barone (Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) set down the top of the Knights' order, 1-2-3, to post his first career save.
The Johnnies return home to host St. Olaf for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 20, in Collegeville.
