Keystone Box ScoreFORT MYERS, Fla. – Saint John's baseball ended its win streak at seven games with a split on Tuesday, March 22, in Fort Myers.
The Johnnies (8-4 overall) started the day with an 8-4 win over Western Connecticut State before losing a three-run lead in the ninth inning in a 5-4 loss, 11-inning loss to Keystone (Pa.). Both SJU starting pitchers completed nine innings each.
SJU extended its 2-1 lead over the Colonials (5-3 overall) with five runs in the seventh inning of the eventual 8-4 win. The two teams combined for 11 errors in the game.
Junior third baseman
Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) led SJU with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, including a two-run single in the seventh. Freshman second baseman
Cole Weaver (Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Freshman
Cameron Jurek (Foley, Minn.) went the distance to pick up his first collegiate victory, allowing four runs (one earned) on 13 hits.
A bases-clearing double tied the game at 4-4 for Keystone (9-2 overall) in the bottom of the ninth and a bases-loaded single, with two outs, scored the game-winning (unearned run). The Giants received votes nationally and were the second team outside of the top 25 poll released by D3baseball.com March 21.
SJU had a runner in scoring position with one out in each of the final three innings (9-11) but could not bring him in.
Senior shortstop
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the Johnnies' cause with three hits and senior first baseman
Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) drove in two runs with his second collegiate triple in the four-run fourth inning.
Sophomore
Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) allowed the four runs on 12 hits in the no-decision. He struck out eight and walked one in the nine innings of work. Sophomore
Ted Christian (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) suffered the loss, allowing the unearned run on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Johnnies return to action with a 9 a.m. EDT doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) on Thursday, March 24, at Terry Park.
