Unearned Runs Sting SJU in Doubleheader Split With Wheaton

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's baseball split a doubleheader with Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday, March 11, in Tucson, Ariz.

The Johnnies (1-3 overall) scored 13 unanswered runs to take game one, 13-7, but dropped the nightcap by a 7-5 score. Thirteen of the 14 runs allowed to the Thunder (5-4 overall) were unearned.

SJU left 19 men on base and batted .310 (9-for-29) with runners in scoring position in the doubleheader, but just 1-for-8 with the bases loaded. The Johnnies had a runner picked off at third base, with two outs and the bases loaded in the first inning and left the bases full in three other occasions in game two alone.

Junior third baseman Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) went 6-for-10 with two home runs, three runs scored and eight RBI on the day.

Wheaton tallied seven unearned runs in the second inning of game two off senior Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview). The Johnnies answered, however, with seven runs of their own in the top of the fourth. SJU hit for the cycle in the inning, sparked by an RBI double from Strey, an RBI triple from freshman outfielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and an RBI double from sophomore first baseman Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) in succession. Schiebel ended the scoring with a three-run bomb over the left-field fence.

SJU broke the 7-7 tie with six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Etzell drove in his second run and freshman outfielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) brought in another with a sacrifice fly. Schiebel followed with a clutch two-run single and senior shortstop Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) ended the scoring with a two-run homer of his own, the sixth of his collegiate career.

Strey went the distance, allowing the seven unearned runs on nine hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

The Johnnies found the scoreboard first in game two with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning, but Wheaton responded with four unearned runs in the top of the fourth.

Schiebel's second home run of the day, another three-run shot, tied the game at 4-4 before an RBI single from Jackson gave SJU a one-run lead, 5-4. Wheaton ended the scoring with three unearned runs in the sixth inning.

Junior Alex Kendall (St. Cloud, Minn./Saint John's Prep) was saddled with the loss. He allowed the seven runs, six unearned, on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Like Strey, Kendall struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Freshman Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) threw 1.2 innings of hitless relief. He struck out three and walked one.

The Johnnies end their brief trip to Tucson with a 12:30 p.m. MST doubleheader against Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday, March 12.
