Saint John's (5-5, 1-4 MIAC) travels to Waverly, Iowa, for a 4 p.m. non-conference match against Wartburg (5-5, 1-1 IIAC) this Sunday, Oct. 9.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: The Johnnies returned to the win column with an upset victory over No.18 St. Olaf last Saturday in Collegeville. Sophomore midfielder Matt Carson (Waconia, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal in the 74th minute of the match which proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore midfielder Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) dribbled the ball around the left end of the field centering a shot to freshman Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.), who then reflected a shot of an Ole directly to Carson. Sophomore goal tender Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made seven saves in the win to record his seventh shutout of the season. Brutger is currently fourth in the MIAC (all games) in saves (44) and is fifth in save percentage (.800). Coborn is still tops in the MIAC in points (22) and assists (8).
A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Wartburg recently lost a tough 3-2 match to Wisconsin-Platteville Oct. 5 as the Pioneers scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left in regulation. Junior Austin Otto leads the team with 11 points (5g/1a) while fellow junior Brandon Cook follows with seven (3g/1a). Sophomore Cade Shatzer has four shutout wins in 900 minutes in net. THE LAST MEETING: Wartburg scored two unanswered goals to defeat SJU 2-1 in the Johnnies' 2010 home opener last fall. Coborn scored his first collegiate goal just four minutes in to the match to give the Johnnies an early 1-0 lead. Wartburg's Neil Shields tied the match at 1-1 with one minute left in the first half before Jon Farrell tallied the game-winner in the 68th minute. SJU played with only ten men on the field in the last 33 minutes of regulation due to a red card.
SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 1-3 all-time against the Knights. All three losses were decided by one goal: 2007 (L, 0-1), 2008 (W, 2-0), 2009 (L, 2-3) and 2010 (L, 1-2).
