A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's forced Augsburg to pull both of its starting pitchers after two innings but settled for a split, the Johnnies' fourth consecutive, on April 25 in Collegeville. The Auggies scored eight unanswered runs in the final three innings to pull out a 12-6 win in game one, but the Johnnies were able to snatch game two, 9-5. SJU built leads of 4-1 and 6-4 in game one but could not hang on as Augsburg (15-18, 8-6 MIAC) pounded out 17 hits in the contest. Senior Matt Johnson (Eagan, Minn.) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs on 12 hits thru 4.2 innings. Senior first baseman Kyle Henkemeyer (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) was a home run short of a cycle, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Senior outfielder Andrew Gurbada (Royalton, Minn.) went 2-for-4 and senior second baseman Joe Eiden (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) tallied one hit in four at-bats with two RBI and two runs scored.

Game two, like the previous three doubleheaders, proved to be in the Johnnies' favor. SJU jumped out to a 9-1 lead after three innings, thanks to a six-run third. Henkemeyer went 3-for-4, while Gurbada posted a 2-for-4 performance with a three-run homer in the second inning. Eiden added two more hits with three RBI. The three combined to go 13-for-23 with eight runs scored, 12 RBI and 22 total bases on the day. Sophomore Hayden Zimmerman (New Richmond, Wis.) improved to 7-1 on the season, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game effort.

A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Both SJU and Macalester enter today's doubleheader having split each of their last four MIAC doubleheaders. The Scots' most recent split came against Carleton on April 25. Senior James Murrey improved to 7-3 on the season (26-12 for his career) by allowing five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in Mac's 3-1 game-one victory. Macalester led 3-0 after two innings in the second contest but was held in check the rest of the way. Carleton, meanwhile, scored twice in the third, once in the fourth to tie it up, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Murrey has a 2.95 ERA in 64 innings with a whopping 87 strikeouts, to just 14 walks, on the season. Robert Williams leads the Scots in batting average (.421), hits (40) and RBI (30).

LAST YEAR'S SERIES: Saint John's opened MIAC play with a pair of shutouts (5-0, 3-0) over Macalester on March 27, 2009, at the Metrodome. In game one, SJU cracked four extra-base hits, including three triples. The Johnnies scored three runs on three consecutive hits in the top of the third inning, all with two outs. SJU added two more runs in the top of the sixth via an RBI-triple by senior Aaron Traut (St. Cloud, Minn./Rocori) and a sacrifice fly from junior Matt Butorac (Maple Grove, Minn.). A leadoff walk by junior catcher Brian Skluzacek (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori), a double from junior outfielder Matt Boys (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore outfielder Jimmy Loonan (Waseca, Minn.) gave the Johnnies an early 1-0 lead in game two. Butorac then blasted a two-run homer, the first of his career at SJU, in the sixth to pad the Johnnies' lead to 3-0. Junior Brett Kramer (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) posted the complete-game shutout, allowing six hits while striking out seven.

'GURB' YOUR ENTHUSIASM: Gurbada extended his hitting streak to 13 games after going a combined 4-for-8 with a three-run homer against Augsburg on April 25. Gurbada currently leads SJU with a .406 batting average, a .563 slugging percentage and 23 RBI. In conference play, he leads the squad in batting (.475), hits (19), home runs (2), RBI (12), slugging (.725) and on-base percentage (.511). He is batting .514 (19-for-37) with 10 runs scored, 12 RBI and six extra-base hits (four doubles, two homers) during the streak, including two hits in six of his last eight games.

THE FIRST BASEMAN CONTINUES TO LEAD-OFF, WELL: Henkemeyer batted .600 (9-for-15) with a 1.000 slugging percentage (15 total bases) at the leadoff spot in the Johnnies' pair of splits against Saint Mary's and Augsburg last week. He was 6-for-9 (.667) with runners in scoring position and 5-for-6 with two outs. Henkemeyer also added two doubles, two triples and five RBI, four of which came with two outs.
