COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's freshman
Max Edwards (Rockford, Minn.) was named the D3baseball.com Region 9 Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year, and garnered first-team All-Region 9 distinction from both D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Tuesday, May 26.
The SJU baseball program has now had 44 All-Region selections since 2010.
Edwards became the first student-athlete to earn MIAC Mike Augustin Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season on May 12. He is SJU's second D3baseball.com Region Rookie of the Year, joining outfielder Wyatt Ulrich '20 in 2017, and the first Johnnie to garner region Pitcher of the Year accolades. Third baseman
Joe Becker '24 was named the D3baseball.com Region 9 Player of the Year last season.
Edwards posted a 6-3 record, 2.01 ERA, .180 opponent batting average and 61 strikeouts in 62.2 innings (11 appearances and eight starts). The righty's opponent batting average included a .167 (9-for-54) mark against left-handed batters and .163 (22-for-135) with the bases empty.
He ended the regular season fifth in NCAA Division III in ERA (1.16), seventh in WHIP (0.85) and 13th in hits allowed per nine innings (4.97).
Edwards led the MIAC in shutouts (2), tied for first in complete games (3), was second in both ERA (1.67) and opponent batting average (.179), tied for third in strikeouts (32) and was seventh in innings (32.1) in conference play.
SJU finished third in the MIAC with a 13-7 record (28-16 overall) and made its 16th-consecutive appearance in the MIAC Tournament (18th overall) under the direction of first-year head coach
