Saint John's tennis returns to MIAC competition by hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (1-6, 0-3 MIAC) went 1-3 during its spring-break trip last week (March 16-20) in Florida. All four matches were decided by 7-0 scores. The Johnnies defeated Western Connecticut State, but fell to then-No. 37 Franklin & Marshall (Pa.), Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Wisconsin-La Crosse.
A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (7-6, 1-3 MIAC) returns five players from last season's playoff team which suffered a 4-2 defeat to St. Olaf in the MIAC quarterfinal. Three of those returning were All-MIAC last season: senior Logan Sandberg, junior Isaac Maddock and sophomore Ryoga Yano. Sandberg earned his second All-MIAC singles honor last season after finishing 9-10 (5-4 MIAC) and is currently 7-6 across Nos. 2-3 singles. Maddock was named All-MIAC in doubles last spring after going 4-5 in MIAC play at No. 1 with senior Kai Pierce and Yano. So far this season, Maddock is 9-3 (3-1 MIAC), mostly at No. 2 singles, and is 6-5 (1-3 MIAC) at No. 1 doubles with Yano. Yano joined the Cobbers for the spring season last year and was named All-MIAC in singles and was All-MIAC honorable mention in doubles. He finished 7-4 (4-2 MIAC) at No. 1 singles, where he is currently 7-5 (1-4 MIAC) so far in 2026.
LAST SPRING: SJU went 1-3 in singles matches decided by the super-breaker in a 6-3 loss to Concordia-Moorhead last April 6 at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D. The Johnnies gained a 2-1 lead after doubles competition but the Cobbers won five of the six singles matches, including three via the super-breaker.
Cooper Anderson '25 and
Ryan Will '25 posted an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while juniors
Alex Draeger (Litchfield, Minn.) and
Sam Wolden (St. Louis Park, Minn.) improved to 8-3 (4-1 MIAC) with an 8-4 victory at No. 2.
Wolden won the Johnnies' lone single match at No. 2 thanks to a 10-5 score in the super-breaker (6-2, 1-6).
SERIES HISTORY: Last season's loss snapped a seven-match win streak in the series for the Johnnies, who are 37-11 against the Cobbers on the court since 1981, including a 23-3 record at home (Collegeville, Sartell, St. Joseph and St. Cloud). CC's last win on SJU's home court occurred April 1, 2000 (6-1 in Collegeville).
