The Johnnie golf team hosts its annual fall invitational this Saturday (St. Cloud C.C. in St. Cloud) and Sunday (Blackberry Ridge G.C. in Sartell), Sept. 20-21. – Live Scoring

TEE TIMES: Saturday's round is scheduled for split tee times starting at 1 p.m. at St. Cloud C.C., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start Sunday at Blackberry Ridge G.C. in Sartell.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's sophomore Gavin Grahek (Maple Grove, Minn.) earned his first medalist honor as the Johnnies finished third out of 22 teams at Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational on Sunday-Monday (Sept. 14-15) at Eau Claire C.C. (par 71).

No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan recorded the day's best round – a 4-over par 288 – to take first place with a two-round score of 585 (+17). The Titans' second team aptly claimed second place with a 593 (+25), followed by SJU (+28, 596), Wisconsin-Stout (+30, 598) and the host Blugolds (+32, 600). St. Olaf was the MIAC's next-best team in sixth at 601 (+33).

The Johnnies' varsity finished second in the tournament on the par-5 holes (-6) and total birdies (24).

Grahek went -2 in his final 11 holes to finish with a 1-over par 72 and a two-day total of 141 (-1) to claim medalist honors out of 120 golfers by one shot. For the tournament, Grahek was -4 on the par-5 holes, +1 on the par-4's and tied for second with seven birdies.

Senior Tim Fultz (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) posted the Johnnies' next-best score on Monday – a 3-over par 74 – to tie for 37th at 153 (+11) and junior Nate Appelhof (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) tied for 27th (+9, 151).

Freshman Austin Roloff (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) tied for 49th (+13, 155) and senior Gus Briguet (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) posted a 4-over par 75 in the final round to boost him into a tie for 58th (+14, 156).

Freshman Braxton Berlin (Lake City, Minn.) and sophomore Charlie Willette (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led SJU Blue, which finished 20th at 633 (+65), on Monday with a 77 (+6) each. Freshman Lukas Ehmke (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) was Blue's top placer in a tie for 49th (+13, 155).

MIAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Grahek was named the MIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for his first-place finish over the weekend in Wisconsin. He started the tournament with a 2-under par 69 Sunday and went -2 in his final 11 holes to finish with a 1-over par 72 Monday for a two-round total of 141 (-1). For the tournament, Grahek was -4 on the par-5 holes, +1 on the par-4's and tied for second with seven birdies. He has a 73.4 scoring average through five rounds so far this fall.

WHO WILL BE HERE: The Johnnies (three teams) are scheduled to be joined by Alexandria T.C.C. (two teams), Augsburg, Bethel (two teams), Carleton, Concordia-Moorhead, Grinnell (Iowa), Linfield (Wash.), Manitoba (Canada), Macalester, St. Olaf, Whitworth (Wash.), Willamette (Ore.) and Wisconsin-Superior (two teams).

LAST YEAR'S TOURNEY: Then-No. 12 SJU won its Fall Invitational by 15 shots last Sept. 14-Sept. 15 (2024). The Johnnies recorded Sunday's best round – a 7-over par 295 – to finish with a two-day score of 576 (E), 15 shots ahead of Concordia-Moorhead in second (+15, 591). Whitworth (Wash.) was third at 599 (+23), one shot ahead of SJU Blue in fourth (+24, 600).

Senior Ethan Kress won the 78-man field with a two-round total of 137 (-7). He scored four birdies Sunday for a 71 (-1) to secure medalist honors for the second time of his career. Kress went -7 on the tourney's eight par-5 holes and tied for first with nine birdies overall.

Andrew Boemer '24 posted a 1-over par 73 to earn third place with a 143 (-1), the sixth top-five finish of his career.

The other three Johnnies on the first-place team all finished in the top 25: Briguet tied for 16th (+6, 150); Grahek tied for 20th (+7, 151); and Drew Krekelberg tied for 23rd (+8, 152).

Appelhof matched Kress' four birdies Sunday to tally a 71 (-1) of his own and tie for 23rd (+8, 152) for SJU Blue. Fultz and Joey Simonich led the squad in a tie for seventh at 147 (+3).

Cole Proctor '25 led SJU White, which claimed sixth at 604 (+28), with a 73 (+1) during the final round and tied for 16th (+6, 150). He tied for second with 26 pars in the two-day tournament. Willette led the fivesome overall in a tie for 11th at 149 (+5).
