ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint John's tennis suffered its third one-point loss of the season with a 4-3 defeat to Colby-Sawyer (N.H.) on Wednesday, March 19, at the USTA National Campus.
The Johnnies (3-4 overall) swept doubles competition, but dropped two singles matches via the super-breaker and managed a pair of wins at Nos. 5-6.
Seniors
Cooper Anderson (St. Paul, Minn./White Bear Lake) and
Ryan Will (Northfield, Minn.) needed a 7-4 tie-breaker to win their match at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores
Alex Draeger (Litchfield, Minn.) and
Sam Wolden (St. Louis Park, Minn.) moved to 6-3 (5-2 at No. 2) with a 6-2 victory at No. 2. Junior
Taylor Duncan (Benson, Minn.) and freshman
Cole Haabala (Alexandria, Minn.) completed the sweep with a 7-5 decision at No. 3.
Junior
Josh Peterson (Perham, Minn.) needed a tie breaker in each set for his win at No. 5 singles – 7-6 (7-3) and 7-6 (7-2) – and Draeger improved his season record to 9-1 (6-0 at No. 6) with a straight-set win (6-2, 7-5) at No. 6.
Will won his first set at No. 1 singles 6-4, but his opponent battled back for a 6-1 advantage in the second and a 10-5 score in the super-breaker. Wolden, meanwhile, lost his first set 6-4 and recorded a 6-0 shutout in the second, only to fall in the super-breaker by a 10-7 margin. The Chargers (3-2) won Nos. 3-4 singles in straight sets.
SJU completes its spring-break trip against Crown at 5 p.m. ET Friday, March 21, in Orlando.
