ITA Regional Results | Midwest Open Results
ST. PETER, Minn. – Ten Saint John's tennis student-athletes competed at the 2026 ITA Midwest Regional Championships and Gustavus Adolphus Midwest Open Oct. 2-3 in Mankato and St. Peter.
Senior Sam Wolden (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and freshman Anthony Perrill (Orono, Minn.) represented SJU in the ITA singles competition, with Perrill seeded 17th in his first weekend of collegiate tennis. Perrill won his first set 6-4, but was downed 7-5 and 10-7 in the tiebreaker to St. Scholastica's Dane Patten in the first round.
Wolden defeated Ulrik Gellein of Carroll (Wis.) 7-6 and 6-2 to advance to Friday's second round. He dropped his second match in a tiebreaker, winning set one 6-3 before falling 6-0 in set two and 15-13 in the breaker.
Perrill and Wolden just missed the quarterfinals in the doubles competition after winning their first two rounds. The duo, playing their first official match together as a doubles team, won 8-2 over UW-Whitewater's pair of Obrachta and Smigel. They defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the second round 8-3 before falling to Benvenutti and Pirri of Luther (Iowa).
Sophomore Nam Tran (Shakopee, Minn./Eden Prairie) and freshman Eli Woidyla (Brandon, S.D./Brandon Valley) also qualified for the ITA doubles competition where they fell to Bethany Lutheran's Barton and Jones, 8-5.
Woidyla advanced to the quarterfinals of the Midwest Open B singles, cruising past opponents from Loras (Iowa), Coe (Iowa) and Grinnell (Iowa) in two sets before falling to Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Sam Murrillo by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
Freshman Djordje Sopko (Novi Becej, Serbia Gimnazija Becej) defeated Loras' Sam Canas in two sets (6-1, 6-3) before falling to BLC's Carballero in a 10-8 tiebreaker. Freshman Lincoln Dille (Litchfield, Minn./Laurel Spring School) defeated a player from Dubuque by two scores of 6-4 before dropping another tiebreaker for the Johnnies to Brett Cillessen of Simpson (Iowa).
Tran and sophomore Jack Gangl (Elk River, Minn.) each fell in their first round of the Midwest Open singles competition, but Tran won all three of his consolation singles matches. All three Johnnie doubles teams competing in the Midwest Open also dropped their first match.
The Johnnies return to action with the MIAC opener at St. Olaf on Saturday, March 6, in Northfield.
