UW-La Crosse Edges SJU Tennis in Florida, 4-3

ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint John's tennis suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to Wisconsin-La Crosse on Monday, March 17, at the USTA National Campus.

The match's deciding point came in doubles competition, where Wisconsin-La Crosse (11-2 overall) swept all three matches thanks to a tie-breaker at No. 1, 7-6 (7-3). SJU (2-3 overall) fell to the Eagles by a 5-2 score last month (Feb. 23) in Rochester.

Senior Ryan Will (Northfield, Minn.) improved to 4-2 (4-1 at No. 1) with a nail-biting victory at the top singles spot. He dropped the opening set 6-4 but battled back with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second and took the tie-breaker, 11-9. 

Sophomore Sam Wolden (St. Louis Park, Minn.) also moved his season record to 4-2 (4-1 at No. 2) with a straight-set win (6-4, 6-1) at the second slot and sophomore Alex Draeger (Litchfield, Minn.) did the same at No. 6 (6-2, 6-1). Draeger is now 7-1 (4-0 at No. 6) on the year.

The Eagles needed a seventh point to win the first set at Nos. 3-5 and prevailed in the second to win all three matches.

SJU faces St. Norbert (Wis.) at 9 a.m. ET Tuesday, March 18, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
