GRANVILLE, Ohio – Saint John's senior diver
Eli Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships with a fifth-place finish out of 17 participants in the 1-meter dive on the final day of the NCAA Central Regional held Saturday, March 1, at Denison's Trumbull Aquatics Center.
Grabinski finished fifth Saturday with a 440.05 in the 1-meter dive and claimed sixth yesterday in the 3-meter dive (443.60). He is the first Johnnie diver to qualify for nationals since his older brother, Jack '23, in 2019-20.
Sophomore
Cody Watts (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) finished 10th Saturday with a 392.50 in the 1-meter dive after claiming 15th on yesterday's 3-meter board (361.95).
The NCAA Central Regional was allocated six male spots in each dive for the NCAA Championships scheduled for March 19-22 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. The men's 3-meter dive begins with prelims at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday, March 19, followed by finals at 6 p.m. ET. The 1-meter dive follows the same time schedule and will be held Friday, March 21.
The allocated spots were determined as follows:
1. First-place finishers from each board will be selected, using two of the allocated spots. If the
same person finishes first on both boards, only one allocation will be used for that athlete.
2. Next, second-place finishers from each board will be selected, using two of the allocated spots. If the same person finishes second on both boards, or one/both of the athletes have already been
selected, only one or no allocations will be used.
3. This will continue with each finishing spot (third, fourth, fifth, etc.) until all the allocated spots
have been assigned for each region.
4. If there is one allocation left and two divers who have not been selected are up for qualification,
finishing in the same ranking on each board, the committee will use the divers combined score
made up of their 1-meter and 3-meter scores. The competitor who has the highest score
will be invited to the meet, earning the final allocation.
Since places first-through-fourth did not change on either board, the fifth and sixth allocations were awarded to Grabinski and Carleton's Hans Anderson since both earned fifth and sixth places at the regional.
Grabinski joins junior
Brayden Slavik (Green Isle, Minn./Chaska), who qualified for nationals in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Slavik will also compete in the 500-yard freestyle (Wednesday, March 19) and 400-yard individual medley (Thursday, March 20) prior to the 1,650-yard freestyle on Saturday, March 22, in Greensboro, N.C.
