EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Saint John's wrestling finished second out of seven teams at Wisconsin-Eau Claire's 8-Man Battles on Saturday, Nov. 22.
UWEC won its home tournament with 162.5 points in the gold brackets, followed by SJU (103.5), Nebraska Wesleyan (96.5) and Augustana of Illinois (87.5). SJU recorded five top-two finishes – one champion and four in second place – and two more in fifth.
Junior Connor Krueger (Superior, Wis.) took the crown at 133 pounds with a 3-0 record. He posted a pair of 5-2 decisions before rolling to a 10-0, major-decision shutout of UWEC's Ryan Goddard in the championship bout. Krueger now touts a 7-1 record this season.
Sophomore Thomas Holmquist (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) finished second with a 2-1 record at 125 pounds. He registered a pair of decisions, 6-2 and 9-3, before falling to the Blugolds' Izzy Balsiger by a 6-1 score in the championship match. Holmquist is now 9-3 on the year.
Freshman Carson Gellerman (Becker, Minn./Big Lake) led SJU with four wins (4-1 record) to claim second in the six-man round robin at 197. He amassed three pins and a major decision before falling to Eau Claire's Ian Pepple, who is ranked as high as fifth nationally by D3wrestle.com, by an 11-0 score. Gellerman is now 8-1 with six pins so far this season.
Junior Aidan Wayne (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) took second with a 2-1 mark at heavyweight to improve to 11-3 on the year. He tallied a decision and first-period pin, his seventh of the season, but fell to the Blugolds' Cole Matulenko by technical fall.
Junior Kris Castro (Simi Valley, Calif./Chaminade) suffered a 7-1 loss in his first match but responded with two-straight technical falls and a 7-5 win for second place at 157 pounds.
Sophomore Dominic Smith (Maple Grove, Minn./St. Michael's, N.M.) and senior Andy Johnston (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) both went 2-1 to take fifth at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively.
A pair of freshmen, Dallas Sibbet (Big Lake, Minn.) and Isaac Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area), won their four-man flights with 3-0 records at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively.
The Johnnies travel east in two weeks to compete at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.
