A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's soccer (12-4-3, 5-4-1 MIAC) closed its regular-season schedule with a 1-0 shutout at Hamline on Saturday, Nov. 1.
The 12 regular season wins are the most for the Johnnies since the 2015 campaign, when the team went 12-4-2 (7-2-1 MIAC) and finished second in the conference.
Sophomore forward Ronan O'Connor (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray) scored the eventual game-winner 3:10 into play, a goal that gave him the program's single-season scoring record outright.
Sophomore defender Thomas Theising (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) started O'Connor's record-breaking goal with a takeaway in the midfield that went off a Piper for an SJU throw-in just past half. Theising launched the throw down the field for freshman forward Lisle Cherwien (Mound, Minn./Orono). Cherwien beat a defender on the outside and fed O'Connor on the rush who tapped it between the goal post and the keeper.
Hamline had its best chance to even the score at minute 38 of the first half, as a shot from Drew Axel bounced around in the box, but freshman goalkeeper Cole Hanson (Urbandale, Iowa) made a quick jump behind him to keep the ball from crossing the line.
The Pipers mustered five of their seven shots in the second half, but Hanson's shutout held with none of the attempts making it on target.
SJU out-shot Hamline by a margin of 12-7 (4-1 on goal). Corner kicks were 4-3 in favor of the Johnnies, but all four came in the first half and all of the Pipers' in the second.
RONAN'S RECORDS: O'Connor now has 20 goals, which passes the record set by Ken Potts in 1974 with 19 in 18 games. His 50 points (20g/10a) are also second-most in a season behind Potts' 56 in '74. He has scored two of SJU's three hat tricks this year. In just two seasons, he is already tied for fifth in career goals with 26 and seventh in points (64).
SJU'S MIAC PLAYOFF HISTORY: The Johnnies are making their 14th appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, which were established in 2003, and 11th in the last 13 seasons. SJU is 7-12-2 in the conference tournament, including a 6-10-1 record on the road. Monday's meeting is the first between SJU and Augsburg in the MIAC soccer playoffs.
A LOOK AT THE AUGGIES: Augsburg (16-1-2, 7-1-2 MIAC) ended its regular season with a 6-0 victory at Concordia on Saturday (Nov. 1). Junior midfielder Jacob Thao scored his first two goals of the season in the win, while senior midfielders Mitchel Munzing and Diego Veit each recorded a goal and an assist. Since dropping their 5-2 decision in Collegeville, the Auggies have gone 6-0-2 with five shutouts. The two ties – both scores of 2-2 – were to MIAC postseason contenders Bethel and St. Olaf, which was ranked No. 4 in the country at the time of the game. Senior forward Carver Tierney, a transfer from Division I Mercyhurst, leads the team in goals (17) and points (39). Munzing has 25 (8g/9a) and senior forward Mizael Harris has 16 (7g/2a). Freshman Christian Hodges has all 18 decisions in net with 12 shutouts, a 0.63 GAA and a .865 save percentage (77 saves). The Auggies were ranked No. 3 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 and No. 2 in the NCAA's National Power Index (NPI).
EARLIER THIS FALL: Saint John's soccer bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit with three-straight goals en route to a 5-2 win over then-No. 3 Augsburg on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Haws Field.
The victory was SJU's first over a top-5 team on record and the first over a nationally ranked opponent since the Johnnies upset then-No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus, 2-1 in overtime, in the 2021 MIAC Playoffs.
The Auggies struck first, as Ceazar Daniell walked through the Saint John's defense to put Division III's third-ranked team ahead with an early 1-0 lead just 2:54 into play.
SJU responded less than three minutes later, taking advantage of a short corner kick between sophomore midfielder Asher Wynn (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and senior defender Noah Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels). Wynn fed Hermanson the ball from the corner, who launched it over the box and to the head of senior defender Foster Conlin (Mooresville, N.C./Mounds View) for his third goal of the season.
The Johnnies became the first team in 11 games to score a second goal on Augsburg, as sophomore forward O'Connor tallied his team- and MIAC-leading 11th of the season. Freshman midfielder Olin Franzwa (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) gathered a misplaced Augsburg free kick and sent it to the foot of classmate Eli Ryan (Victoria, Minn./Minnetonka), who booted it down the field. A racing O'Connor tucked the ball between the Augsburg keeper's legs for the lead.
Freshman defender Gabe Franzman (Bettendorf, Iowa) scored an unconventional third goal that proved to be the game-winner in minute 32, as his throw in from the sideline tipped off the Auggie keeper's hands and into the goal.
Two minutes later, Augsburg was awarded a penalty kick which resulted in the team's MIAC-leading third PK goal of the season and a 3-2 SJU lead at the break.
The Auggies applied sustained pressure for nearly 10 minutes after halftime, but a highlight-reel goal off the heads of Cherwien and Conlin put the game out of reach. A free kick from Wynn on the sideline ended up in the box for Conlin, who headed the ball laterally to his teammate for goal four.
Ryan got one of his own two minutes later, the first of his collegiate career, attacking down the goal line for a sharp-angle shot that beat the Augsburg keeper on the post.
Hanson made eight saves to record his first collegiate win in his second start as a Johnnie.
The Auggies posted a 23-12 advantage in shots (10-7 on net) and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
The two teams combined for seven cards in the contest. Augsburg was issued a straight red card in the 75th minute and played a man down for the final 25:08.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 44-13-12 all-time against the Auggies on the soccer pitch, including a 17-6-5 record in Minneapolis. SJU is 2-5-2 in its last nine trips to Edor Nelson Field.
