A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-4-3, 2-4-1 MIAC) and Carleton played to a 1-1 draw yesterday (Wednesday, Oct. 15) in Northfield. The tie was the first between the two teams since Sept. 26, 2015, a double-overtime 1-1 decision in Northfield. SJU lost the previous four meetings dating back to Oct. 30, 2021.
All of Wednesday's scoring occurred in just 35 seconds of game play, as both teams were awarded consecutive penalty kicks in the second half.
Carleton controlled game play in the first half, tallying seven shots through the first 45 minutes toward SJU freshman goalkeeper
Cole Hanson (Urbandale, Iowa). Hanson saved both on-target attempts to keep the score deadlocked 0-0 at the half.
Seven minutes after the break, Carleton midfielder Briggs Priem was shoved to the ground in the corner of the box while trying to battle the ball to the goal line. He beat Hanson for his eighth goal against this season and his second off a PK attempt.
After kickoff, Carleton booted the ball out of bounds to give possession to SJU. The throw-in landed on the foot of sophomore forward
Ronan O'Connor (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray), who battled into the box and was knocked to the ground by a pair of Knights. O'Connor converted his first PK attempt of the season for his 12th goal this year, tying him with Jim Phelps '82 and John Boyd '89 for the third-most in an SJU season.
The goal was SJU's second penalty kick of the season (2-for-2) and second allowed (2-for-2).
Hanson finished with seven saves in net for his first collegiate tie (2-2-1 record). Five of those saves came in the second half. Carleton had a chance to take a late lead with a cross through the box, but the shot sailed high over the goal.
The Johnnies were out-shot 16-6 (8-2 on goal) by the Knights but did not give up a corner kick (3-0 in favor of SJU).
A LOOK AT THE YELLOWJACKETS: Wisconsin-Superior (9-4, 7-0 UMAC) returned to the win column Saturday (Oct. 11) with a 4-0 shutout at Northwestern. Seth Davidson leads the team with 18 points (7g/4a), while Jake Kidd has a team-best eight goals and is second with points (16). Patrick Sessions is 5-3 with a 0.74 GAA and a .844 save percentage (27 saves).
TWO YEARS AGO: Senior forward
Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) scored the game's lone goal and goalkeeper
Evan Siefken '25 made eight saves in the Johnnies' 1-0 win over Superior the last time the two programs met on Sept. 5, 2023, in Collegeville.
A give-and-go between
Will Falkman and senior defender
Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) near the top-right of the box created a feed to a streaking Bowman at the left post for the header goal in the 67th minute.
The Yellowjackets posted a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but the Johnnies came alive in the second half of their home opener for a 10-4 advantage (12-11 for the game).
The physical game resulted in six yellow cards – three on each team – all in the second half.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 6-4-1 all-time against Superior on the soccer pitch, but just 3-3 in Collegeville.
