A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-4-2, 2-4-0 MIAC) aims to bounce back after it dropped a 2-1 decision to Macalester this past Saturday (Oct. 11) in St. Paul. The two teams were stuck at a 1-1 draw until the 63rd minute when Macalester took the lead for good. SJU got a goal from freshman forward Lisle Cherwien (Mound, Minn./Orono) in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net for the second equalizer in the second.

Macalester wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Saturday, claiming possession on a missed Johnnie throw in to tee up the first goal of the game just 2:56 in. A MAC defender booted the ball to midfield to force a give-and-go play to Zach Liptzin, who tapped his second of the year past freshman goalkeeper Cole Hanson (Urbandale, Iowa).

Cherwien scored his fifth goal of the season to tie the game almost 20 minutes later after turning a long ball from senior forward Connor Drong (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) past a defender and into the goal.

MAC's scoring leader, Kadsan Blattman, set a through-ball to an uncontested Chris Fantz in the second half for the game-winner in the 64th minute.

Three of the Johnnies' remaining five shots landed on target, but each was met by Scot goalkeeper Drew Moseman.

Hanson (2-2-0) finished with three saves between the pipes, while Cherwien, Drong and sophomore defender Thomas Theising (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) each led the Johnnies with two shots on goal.

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Carleton (7-3-2, 1-2-2 MIAC) extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 1-1 draw at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday (Oct. 11) in St. Peter. Senior forward Ben Pennell provided the game-tying tally, his 12th goal of the season, in the 57th minute. Pennell leads the team in points (26), game-winning goals (3), shots (56) and shots on goal (27). Senior midfielder Jonathan Vonderlage is next with 12 points thanks to a team-best eight assists. Senior goalkeeper Leo Kugel is 6-2-2 with a 1.45 GAA and a .692 save percentage (36 saves).

LAST YEAR: SJU ended the 2024 season with a 4-1 loss at Carleton last Nov. 2 in Northfield. The Knights gained a 1-0 lead on Owen Flanagan's 11th goal of the season in the 28th minute and added three more in the 56th, 66th and 80th minutes.

Forward Cooper Nowak erased the shutout for SJU with his first goal of the season on a feed from senior defender Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) in the 85th minute.

Goalkeeper Evan Siefken '25 made six saves in his final collegiate game. SJU totaled a 6-2 margin in corner kicks, though Carleton managed a 19-7 advantage in shots (10-2 on goal).

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 25-16-3 against Carleton since 1983, but just 10-11-2 on the Knights' home pitch. The Johnnies are 5-13-2 in the last 20 meetings (since 2007), including a 1-8-2 record at Bell Field.
