Day 1 Results
LIGONIER, Pa. – Saint John's golf is in 12th following the first two rounds of Carnegie Mellon's Tartan Invitational held Monday, Oct. 13, at Laurel Valley C.C. (par 72).
No. 23 Rochester (N.Y.) shot a 589 (+13) in 36 holes for the lead, one shot ahead of No. 1 Emory (Ga.) and two in front of No. 6 Huntingdon (Ala.) in second. SJU is 19 shots from Rochester and eight from the top five (608, +32). Three of the four teams behind the Johnnies are nationally ranked – No. 10 Kenyon (Ohio), No. 2 Methodist (N.C.) and No. 19 Guilford (N.C.).
Tuesday's final round begins with a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start.
The 15-school field includes 11 teams ranked in the latest (Oct. 10) Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division III Top 25 poll.
Sophomore
Gavin Grahek (Maple Grove, Minn.) leads the Johnnies with a two-round 146 (+5) for 14th among 87 golfers. He was 16th after shooting a 74 (+2) in the morning's round, which included four birdies and nine pars. He managed to move up after round two dropped six golfers out of the top 15. Grahek carded a 3-over 75 on his second 18 with three birdies and 10 pars.
Senior
Gus Briguet (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) ended the day on a high note, climbing the leaderboard with an even-par 72 in his second round. He shot par on 14 holes with two birdies to jump up to 30th.
Senior
Ethan Kress (Woodbury, Minn.) started the day 5-over par but closed out round one with six pars and a birdie in his last seven holes. He bogeyed and doubled twice to start round two but finished with a birdie and six pars for his second 77 of the day for 46th.
Junior
Nate Appelhof (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) struggled to find a rhythm on Monday, combining to start the first four holes 9-over par in both rounds. He hit a series of pars in each round, including six in a row on his back nine on round one and four on Nos. 6-9 in round two. He carded five birdies on the day for a 157 (+13) in 69th.
Freshman
Austin Roloff (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) is alongside Appelhof in a tie for 69th. He had the second-best round one, a 4-over par 76. Roloff shot par on all but four of his first 18 holes. Roloff was one of four Johnnies to shoot birdie on hole 15 in round two and added nine pars in a round two 81.
