9/23/2024 3:43:00 PM

Saint John's soccer resumes its suspended game against Hamline at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, in St. Paul. – Live Stats | Live Video

SUSPENDED FROM SATURDAY: The first 5:42 of Saturday's game was played before lightning delayed the contest an hour and 15 minutes. Play resumed, but weather prompted another delay and the eventual postponement. The game is scoreless and has 29:43 remaining in the first half.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (2-3, 0-1 MIAC) opened its conference schedule with a 1-0 loss to Macalester last Tuesday (Sept. 17) at Haws Field.

Cody Da scored the game's lone goal, his fourth of the season, for Macalester on a deflection off a corner kick in the 63rd minute. The Scots recorded a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks on the day.

The Johnnies nearly gained a 1-0 lead when freshman forward Ronan O'Connor (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray) looked to have scored his third goal in the last two games 12 minutes in, but the tally was disallowed due to offsides. Junior forward Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) hit the post with 18:30 to play in the first half.

The Scots also had a pair of notable opportunities as a team save from SJU denied Da of a goal late in the 27th minute and senior goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made sprawling save near the post on a free kick from just outside the box 10 minutes into the second half.

Siefken made six saves in the loss as the Scots out-shot SJU 15-9 (8-6 on goal).

A LOOK AT THE PIPERS: Hamline (8-1, 0-1 MIAC) hosted Lawrence (Wis.) on Sunday (Sept. 22) and cruised to a 4-1 win thanks to a 28-5 advantage in shots. Jessie Juarez gave the home team a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 27th minute before sophomore Ryder Tomlinson Sterud and freshman Ricky Kwabena Yawson assisted on each other's goals for a 3-1 lead. The duo leads the team in goals with six apiece, though Tomlinson Sterud is first with 17 points overall to Kwabena Yawson's 15. Juarez is third with 11 (3g/5a).

LAST FALL: SJU scored three unanswered goals in the second half in a 3-1 home win over Hamline last Sept. 16 (2023) in Collegeville. The Pipers took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal from Nate Vogel in the 29th minute. The Johnnies, however, stormed out of the break and controlled the second half, despite being down a man for the game's final 34:26.

Sophomore defender McKaid Schotzko (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) tied the game at 1-1 with his first collegiate goal – a header off a corner kick from junior midfielder Will Falkman (Waconia, Minn.) – 3:15 after halftime.

Junior forward Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal on a pretty through ball from Hermanson 3:38 later. The goal was Bowman's team-leading fourth of the season and ninth of his Johnnie career.

Falkman, however, was issued his first yellow card 40 seconds later and earned his second 2:01 after that to leave SJU down a man the rest of the way.

The adversity failed to slow down SJU, however, as sophomore midfielder Andrew Pitzner (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) collected his second goal of the season following a give-and-go between junior defender Lucca Holman (San Rafael de Escazu, Puerto Rico/Lincoln School) and senior midfielder Christian Rodriguez (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) in the 68th minute.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies lead the series with a 36-8-3 record since 1980, including a 16-6-1 mark on the Pipers' home pitch. SJU won 23 consecutive games against HU from 1982-2004.
