SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's tennis ended the 2024 season with an 8-1 loss to regionally ranked Carleton on Sunday, April 28, at Sta-Fit.
Despite the loss, SJU (5-10, 4-5 MIAC) nearly earned its 10th trip to the five-team MIAC Playoffs in the last 12 seasons, but Macalester defeated St. Olaf 5-4 today in Owatonna. A St. Olaf win would have placed Macalester in a three-way tie with the Johnnies and Bethel, and SJU would have won the tie-breaker (match points won within the three-way tie) for the fifth and final postseason spot.
The tandem of senior
Will Deters (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) and freshman
Alex Draeger (Litchfield, Minn.) provided the lone win, their sixth-consecutive, for SJU at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. The duo finished with an 8-6 record in dual-meet competition, including a 6-2 mark in conference play.
Senior
Ian Aadland (Brainerd, Minn.) and freshman
Sam Wolden (St. Louis Park, Minn.) suffered an 8-5 defeat at No. 2 doubles.
The Knights (14-5, 8-1 MIAC), who were listed at No. 5 in April 24's NCAA Region VII rankings, swept the six singles matches in straight sets.
