ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint John's tennis started its spring-break trip with a pair of losses on Monday, March 4, at the USTA National Campus.
The Johnnies (1-2 overall) opened the trip with a 7-0 loss to Division I North Carolina A&T (6-0 overall) and ended the day with a narrow 5-4 loss to Allegheny (Pa.) under the lights. Two of the Gators' (4-2 overall) points were decided via tie-breaker.
SJU nearly swept the doubles competition against Allegheny thanks to an 8-5 win from senior
Ian Aadland (Brainerd, Minn.) and junior
Ryan Will (Northfield, Minn.) at No. 1 and senior
Will Deters (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) and freshman
Alex Draeger (Litchfield, Minn.) at No. 3, but the Gators eked out an 8-7 (7-2) decision at No. 2.
Allegheny won at Nos. 1-4 singles, including a super-breaker victory at No. 4. Sophomore
Taylor Duncan (Benson, Minn.) and junior
Cooper Anderson (St. Paul, Minn./White Bear Lake) won in straight sets at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
The Johnnies face Division II Cedarville (Ohio) for an early morning match (7:30 a.m. ET) on Wednesday, March 6, in Orlando.
