SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's tennis started its 2024 season with a 6-3 win over Hamline on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Sta-Fit.
Hamline (4-4, 0-4 MIAC) gained a 2-1 lead at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, but the Johnnies (1-0, 1-0 MIAC) won five of the six singles matches for the victory.
Senior
Will Deters (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) and freshman
Alex Draeger (Litchfield, Minn.) denied the Pipers a doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3.
Junior
Ryan Will (Northfield, Minn.) played his first match at No. 1 singles and earned the win via the super-breaker. He dropped the first set 6-2, but bounced back with a 7-6 (7-2) victory in the second and posted a 10-4 score in the super-breaker.
The other four SJU singles wins were in straight sets: freshman
Sam Wolden (St. Louis Park, Minn.) at No. 3; senior
Daniel Perez (Quito, Ecuador) at No. 4; senior
Mason Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) at No. 5; and senior
Mark Rosen (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) at No. 6.
SJU's lone singles loss was senior
Ian Aadland (Brainerd, Minn.) via the super-breaker at No. 2.
The Johnnies travel to Florida for five matches over spring break March 4-8 in the Orlando area.
