A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (6-6-1, 3-4-1 MIAC) scored two goals in the final 2:13, including the game-winner from freshman defender Luke Madden with 1.4 seconds remaining, to earn a 4-3 victory over St. Scholastica on Wednesday (Oct. 23) in Collegeville.

Senior goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) took a free kick at midfield that found junior defender Foster Conlin (Mooresville, N.C./Mounds View) at the top-left of the box. Conlin deflected the ball to freshman forward Ronan O'Connor (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray), but the bounce drew O'Connor to the left edge of the box. O'Connor quickly possessed the ball, spun and found Madden (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) at the far post for the left-footed game-winner and his first collegiate goal.

Madden also had a foot in the Johnnies' game-tying goal with 2:13 to play. He took a corner kick that ricocheted off sophomore midfielder Danny Boyle (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) high up into the air. When the ball came closer to Earth, Madden sent a header into the box that somehow found its way through traffic to the right foot of sophomore defender McKaid Schotzko (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) for his second goal of the season.

The Johnnies built a 2-0 lead in the game's first 18 minutes, but the Saints answered with three-straight goals for the lead.

Junior forward Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) gave the home team a 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute on a give-and-go from junior forward Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels). The goal was Bowman's fourth of the season and 13th of his career. Boyle then made it 2-0 with his third goal of the season on a well-executed cross from Schotzko 3:32 later.

CSS tied the game on a pair of goals from Gabriel Marchesoni, his team-leading 11th and 12th of the season. He dribbled over 30 yards for his first tally in the 37th minute and tied the contest at 2-2 with a penalty kick in the 61st. David Lopez gave the visitors the lead thanks to a well-placed free kick to the back post from Truls Wichstrom-Johansen with 10:09 to play.

Siefken made five saves in the win to even his record at 6-6-1 this season. SJU recorded a 22-13 margin in shots (10-8 on goal) and 11 corner kicks to the Saints' five.

The home team was whistled to a 23-7 count in fouls, though CSS was handed five yellow cards (as well as a red card after time expired).

ANOTHER LATE GOAL: The Johnnies have now scored 14 goals in the 90th minute since 2000. Earlier this season, junior midfielder Isaiah Silver (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored with 13 seconds left to seal the 3-0 win over St. Norbert (Wis.) on Sept. 7 in Collegeville and Hermanson found the net with 23.8 seconds remaining in the Johnnies' 2-2 tie Oct. 2 at Augsburg.

The latest of the 14 goals, prior to Madden's tally, came in 2019, when Brandt Belisle found the net with three seconds left in the Johnnies' 7-2 home win over Hamline.

Madden's goal on Wednesday was one of just five SJU goals scored in the final minute of regulation that led to a tie or win: Joe Balder - 89:49 - at Wisconsin-Superior on Oct. 10, 2010, for a 1-1 tie; Belisle - 89:01 - at Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sept. 11, 2021, for a 2-2 tie; Ryan Erickson - 89:31 - vs. Hamline on Oct. 17, 2021, for a 2-1 win; and Carter Hermanson – 89:37 – at Augsburg on Oct. 2, 2024, for a 2-2 tie.

A LOOK AT THE OLES: St. Olaf (10-4-3, 6-0-2 MIAC) takes the pitch Saturday following two consecutive draw – 1-1 on Oct. 19 vs. Augsburg and 3-3 on Wednesday (Oct. 23) at No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus. The Oles erased a 3-1 halftime deficit with two quick goals in the second half – 49th and 52nd minutes – for the draw. Senior forward Shea Bechtel scored the team's first and third goals on Wednesday and leads the team in that category with 10, as well as 24 points. Sophomore defender, and younger brother to Shea, Ryan Bechtel and fifth-year senior forward Clemente Archuc Puig co-lead the squad in assists with seven. Senior goalkeeper Peter Forsyth has a 10-4-2 record with five shutouts, a 1.10 GAA and a .738 save percentage (48 saves).

LAST FALL: Then-No. 17 St. Olaf erased a 2-0 deficit with four second-half goals to defeat SJU 4-2 last Oct. 21 (2023) at Haws Field.

The Johnnies gained a 1-0 lead on an own goal 13:47 into the game when junior defender Noah Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) sent a long volley to the box and a St. Olaf defender deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Junior forward Riley Buxell (Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area) made it 2-0 with a beautiful shot inside the left post for his third goal of the season in the 30th minute. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Pitzner (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) tallied the assist.

Robi Buzakovic cut the deficit in half for STO in the 55th minute and Victor Gaulmin tied it 1:02 later with his 10th goal of the season. An own goal proved to be the deciding tally in the 59th minute and Ian Holtz-Hazeltine added some insurance in the 77th minute.

Siefken made eight saves in the loss. The Oles posted a 21-15 advantage in shots (12-5 on goal) and a 13-2 margin in corner kicks.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 34-21-5 against the Oles since 1973, including a 15-10-2 advantage in Northfield. STO, however, STO has won each of the last five meetings overall (seven of the last 10).
