Â
Senior forward
Max Borst (Edina, Minn.) gave SJU, which scored two goals on its first three shots on net, a quick 1-0 lead on a shot from the left faceoff circle 39 seconds into the game for his second goal of the season and 16th of his career.
Â
Junior forward
Garrett Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.) deflected a shot from junior defenseman
Cooper Anderson (White Bear Lake, Minn.) with 5:16 elapsed for his first tally of the season and second of his career.
Â

Â
Connor Mahony erased the shutout for Gustavus with a power-play goal halfway (9:54) through the second period and Stanislav Danaev cut the visitors' deficit to one 1:16 later, seconds after the Johnnies failed to record a shot on goal during a 3-on-1 rush.

The Johnnies completed the weekend sweep with a 5-1 win last Saturday (Jan. 6) in St. Peter.

Jack Olsen (Lakeville, Minn.) opened the scoring with a 5-on-3, power-play goal - his third tally of the season and seventh of his career - 8:50 into the game. The power-play goal was the Johnnies' first since Nov. 24 and snapped a 0-for-25 drought.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: Wisconsin-Stout (5-8-2, 3-4-0 WIAC) suffered a narrow 3-2 loss at Bethel last Friday (Jan. 5) before playing to a 4-4 tie at Hamline on Saturday (Jan. 6). After a scoreless first period on Friday, Bethel got on the board with a pair of goals early in the second period before the Blue Devils answered back with a pair of their own from freshman forward McCabe Dvorak and senior forward Brandon Connett to take a 2-2 tie into the third period. Bethel answered with a goal 24 seconds into the third period. Stout outshot the Royals by a 36-29 margin. The home team scored the first two goals of the game again on Saturday, but the Blue Devils eventually tied the game on a power-play goal from senior forward Dylan Rallis with the goalie pulled and an extra attacker with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Freshman forward Boyd Stahlbaum leads the Blue Devils with 20 points (10g/10a), while freshman forward Nicolas Pigeon has 19 (5g/14a) and 2023 All-WIAC honoree, junior forward Peyton Hart, has 18 (10g/8a). Sophomore goaltender Dawson Green and junior goaltender Tyler Masternak, a 2023 All-WIAC honoree, have split time in net this season. Masternak is 2-4-1 with a shutout, 3.82 GAA and .874 save percentage, while Green is 3-4-1 record with a 3.38 GAA and a .888 save percentage.Â
LAST SEASON: Wisconsin-Stout rode its special teams to a 3-1 win over Saint John's last year (Jan. 13) at the HBNHC in St. Cloud. Stout scored two power-play goals and a shorthanded tally against SJU, which posted a 32-23 advantage in shots.
Â
Jacob Halvorson gave Stout an early 1-0 lead on a power-play goal, his 10th tally of the season, 4:20 into the game. SJU outshot the Blue Devils in the opening period, 12-8, and had scoring multiple opportunities. Junior forward
Jackson Sabo (Rosemount, Minn.) was denied on two point-blank chances, one following a bad defensive-zone turnover by Stout and the other on a breakaway, and sophomore defenseman
Zach Enebak (Lakeville, Minn.) hit the pipe. Sabo also hit the pipe in the second period.
Â
Nick Michel '23 tied the game with his team-leading 12th goal of the season 1:09 into the second period when he deflected a shot from Enebak to the back of the net.
Â
The Blue Devils, however, regained the lead on another power-play goal – with two seconds remaining in the man advantage – from Gunner Moore 4:18 later. Rallis sealed the win for Stout on a shorthanded goal with 6:37 remaining in regulation.
Â
Howe made his sixth collegiate start and stopped 20 shots in the defeat.
Â
The Blue Devils finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while SJU registered only one shot on goal across three opportunities with the man advantage.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 17-6-1 against the Blue Devils, including a 9-1 record in Menomonie. The loss last year was the first in the last 10 meetings (8-1-1 record).
A LOOK AT THE POINTERS: Wisconsin-Stevens Point (11-3, 6-1 WIAC) won a pair of non-conference games last weekend (Jan. 5-6) on the road over Hamline (5-1) and Augsburg (4-2). Senior forward Andrew Poulias netted his first hat trick on Friday against the Pipers. The Pointers were able to get out to a 2-0 lead in Saturday's matchup before the Auggies got on the board late in the second period and again midway through the third to tie the game at 2-2. Sophomore forward San Bunting scored the game-winning goal with 5:17 left in the game before junior forward Fletcher Anderson added an empty-netter to seal the win. Anderson, who was last season's WIAC Co-Player of the Year, UWSP with 17 points (7g/10a) and Poulias, a 2023 All-WIAC honoree, has 15 (9g/6a). Sophomore goaltender Alex Proctor is 9-2 with a shutout, 2.14 GAA and .920 save percentage. The Pointers stayed at No. 8 in Monday's (Jan. 8) USCHO.com Top 15 poll and host Concordia-Moorhead Friday night (Jan. 12) before facing SJU on Saturday.
A YEAR AGO: SJU returned to the win column in a big way with a 3-2 victory over then-No. 10 Wisconsin-Stevens Point last year (Jan. 14) at Bernicks Arena in Sartell. Huber made a career-high 41 saves and a pair of Johnnies scored their first goals of the season in the victory, which snapped a nine-game winless streak for SJU in the series. The Johnnies' last win over the Pointers occurred Nov. 2, 2007, in Stevens Point, Wis. (a 5-3 score).
Â
Peter Tabor '23 gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season 4:23 into the game, but Mick Heneghan tied it for UWSP on a power-play tally with 4:59 left in the frame.
Â
Junior forward
Spencer Rudrud (Eden Prairie, Minn.) gave the lead back to the Johnnies with the lone goal of the second period 8:52 in, his first tally of the season, on a one-timer directly off a faceoff win from Sabo.
Â
Jack Johnson '23 padded the lead with what proved to be the game-winning goal - his first goal of the season and 15th of his career - at the 11:51 mark of the third period on a nice cross-ice feed from Michel.
Â
Fletcher Anderson cut the Pointers' deficit to one 38 seconds later, but the visitors could not find the equalizer with the goaltender pulled for the game's final two minutes.
Â
SJU went 0-for-5 on the power play, including a pair of 5-on-3 advantages: for 1:40 late in the first period and another for a duration of 1:47 in the second.
SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 6-12-1 all-time against the Pointers. Last season's win in Sartell broke the Johnnies' seven-game losing streak in the series.Â
