A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (5-2-2, 2-1-1 MIAC) and Augsburg played to a scoreless draw on Tuesday (Sept. 26) in Collegeville. The Johnnies out-shot the Auggies by a 15-8 margin (5-3 on goal), including 9-4 in the second half. SJU's best chance came in the 77th minute when sophomore forward
Cooper Nowak (Princeton, Minn.) turned the corner on the right wing and centered the ball through the box to classmate
Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) at the far post, but Bowman's re-direction went wide of the net.
Junior goalkeeper
Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made three saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 11th of his career. Augsburg entered the game averaging 4.63 goals and 21.8 shots per contest this fall.
SCORELESS DRAWS: The scoreless draw was SJU's seventh since 2010, but just the first in MIAC play since Oct. 23, 2012 (vs. Hamline at Haws Field). The Johnnies are now 38-8-7 against the Auggies since 1976, including a 21-2-3 record in Collegeville. All three home ties vs. Augsburg were scoreless (1980, 2008 and 2023).
A LOOK AT THE WARHAWKS: Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-0-3 overall) remained unbeaten this fall with, like SJU, a scoreless tie Monday (Sept. 25) at home against Wartburg (Iowa). Shots were even at 8-8 (2-2 on goal). Sophomore forward Cooper Re leads the team in goals (6) and points (12), while junior forward Jacob Mouille has three goals and an assist. The duo has two game-winning goals apiece and has combined for 45 shots this fall. Senior Duncan Morgan has started all but one game in net and touts a 0.34 GAA, .912 save percentage (31 saves) and five shutouts.
LAST FALL: SJU ended a weekend trip - and five-game, road stretch to start the season - with a 3-0 shutout at Wisconsin-Whitewater last Sept. 11 (2022).
Midfielder
Kevin Stark-Haws '23 scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, his second career tally, in the 10th minute. Midfielder
Drew Engel '23 settled the ball near midfield and played a vertical ball to Nowak, who drove diagonally to the goal until a defender stepped to him. Stark-Haws made an incisive run from the attacking-mid position and Nowak cut the ball back against the grain of the play, where the senior finished it low to the right with his left foot.
Junior midfielder
Christian Rodriguez (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) made it 2-0 with his second career goal less than seven minutes later. Stark-Haws took a pass from sophomore forward
Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) and slipped the ball to Rodriguez, who hammered a shot from atop the box across the goal to the far post.
Sophomore defender
Noah Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) ended the scoring with his first collegiate goal, on a give-and-go from his twin brother Carter, in the 66th minute. Siefken made four saves to record his second shutout of the season and fifth of his SJU career. SJU out-shot the Warhawks by a 12-7 margin (6-4 on net) and corner kicks were even at 6-6.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 5-2-1 all-time against Whitewater on the soccer field, including a 2-1 record in Collegeville.
