32 Johnnies Receive Academic All-MIAC Recognition in Track & Field

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Thirty-two Saint John's University track and field student-athletes collected 2022-23 Winter and Spring Academic All-MIAC honors on Wednesday, June 28.

For the third-consecutive academic year, SJU led the MIAC in male honorees with a total of 155 in 2022-23, followed by Macalester (134), Gustavus Adolphus (123) and Carleton (111). The Johnnies had 65 fall honorees (cross country, football, soccer), ahead of Macalester (53) and Carleton (50).

Those honored (listed alphabetically) include:

-Sophomore Andrew Adams (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), an accounting major (pre-law emphasis) with a 3.97 GPA;
-Junior Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy), a biochemistry major (pre-medicine emphasis) with a 4.0 GPA;
-Senior Riley Berg (Bemidji, Minn.), a biology major with a 3.84 GPA;
-Sophomore Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest), a social science (secondary education) major with a 3.85 GPA;
-Sophomore Aiden Chalmers (Chaska, Minn./Minnetonka), a biochemistry major (pre-medicine emphasis) with a 3.62 GPA;
-Sophomore Ryan Conzemius (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas), a biology major with a 3.87 GPA;
-Junior Carson Davis (New Prague, Minn.), a computer science major with a 3.50 GPA;
-Senior Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.), a biology and psychology double-major with a 3.71 GPA;
-Senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), an accounting major with a 3.94 GPA;
-Senior Charles Ellis (Long Lake, Minn./Orono), an economics major with a 3.81 GPA;
-Senior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.), a nutrition major with a 3.55 GPA;
-Junior Jacob Gathje (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine), a mathematics major with a 4.0 GPA;
-Sophomore Joe Gathje (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson), an economics major with a 4.0 GPA;
-Senior Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.), an accounting major with a 3.53 GPA;
-Junior Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.), a computer science major with a 4.0 GPA;
-Senior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.), an accounting major with a 3.74 GPA;
-Junior Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.), an accounting major with a 3.92 GPA;

-Sophomore Gavin LaMott (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park), a biology major with a 3.50 GPA;
-Sophomore Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.), a biochemistry major (pre-medicine emphasis) with a 3.68 GPA;
-Sophomore Ethan Leonard (Chaska, Minn.), an accounting major with a 3.72 GPA;
-Senior Jacob Lipke (Stewart, Minn./Hutchinson), a mathematics major with a 3.97 GPA;
-Senior Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.), a biochemistry major with a 3.83 GPA;
-Senior Nico Merickel (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle), an economics major with a 3.89 GPA;
-Senior Tom Nemanich (Red Wing, Minn.), a philosophy and psychology double-major with a 3.72 GPA;
-Sophomore Emanuel Popoca (Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy), an accounting major with a 3.57 GPA;
-Senior Sam Rengo (Esko, Minn.), a political science major with a 3.65 GPA;
-Sophomore Liam Sheeley (Edina, Minn./Holy Angels), an exercise and health science major with a 3.66 GPA;
-Senior Josh Sletta (Madelia, Minn.), a nutrition major with a 3.73 GPA;
-Sophomore Aidan Thomas (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace), a computer science and mathematics double-major with a 4.0 GPA;
-Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), an accounting major with a 3.93 GPA.

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale to qualify for Academic All-MIAC recognition. Transfers, like freshmen, must complete a full academic year to be eligible the following season. 

Athletically, student-athletes must be a member of a MIAC-sponsored, varsity team and be academically and athletically eligible. The student-athlete must have utilized a season of participation (per NCAA and MIAC definitions) and have remained on the sports roster through the conclusion of the sports season.

The Academic All-MIAC honor is the fourth for Diekmann, the third-consecutive for DeGross, Ellis, Grand, Hague, Lipke, Mattock, Nemanich, Rengo, Sletta and Young, and the second for seven others: Allen, Berg, Davis, Jacob Gathje, Grove, Hennen and Kloeppner.

Grove earned the MIAC's Elite 22 Award for both men's indoor and outdoor track and field, which are given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA among the All-MIAC honorees. Allen collected the honor in the fall with cross country, months after earning the award in both track and field seasons (2022).

SJU won its second-consecutive MIAC outdoor team title (14th overall) May 12-13 at Bethel and had two All-Americans at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Rochester, N.Y.: Hague in the javelin (seventh place) and senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) in the 100-meter dash (seventh place).
