Round 3 Results
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Saint John's golf team enters the final round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship in fourth place, seven shots from the lead and three from second, following the third round held Thursday, May 18, at Champion Trace G.C. (par 72).
Defending national champion Methodist (N.C.), which entered play ranked No. 3 nationally, was -5 through the first 11 holes and posted the day's best round – a 3-over par 291 – to break its tie with No. 7 Piedmont (Ga.) and gain a four-shot lead at 864 (E). No. 18 Rensselaer (N.Y.) is third (+6, 870).
SJU – which entered the national tournament ranked No. 14 – totaled a 294 (+6) Thursday to sit in fourth, three shots ahead of No. 2 Christopher Newport (Va.) in sixth (+10, 874), with a three-round score of 871 (+7).
The Johnnies begin the final round off No. 1 at 8:45 a.m. ET Friday, May 19.
Sophomore
Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) led SJU Thursday with a career-low, 3-under par 69. He carded four birdies and is tied for 38th with a 221 (+5).
Juniors
Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) and
Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) followed with a 74 (+2) each. Loxtercamp collected a team-best 14 pars and is tied for 30th (+4, 220), while Schuler shot even-par over his last 12 holes and is tied for 23rd (+3, 219).
Junior
Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) countered a pair of triple-bogeys with three birdies and an eagle, on the par-5 No. 15 (516 yards), to finish with a 77 (+5). He is tied for 11th on the leaderboard with a 217 (+1) and is currently leading the field with a -8 on the 12 par-5 holes so far in the tournament.
Senior
Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) went +7 on his last three holes and rounded out the Johnnies' five with an 81 (+9).
