MOVED INDOORS: Saturday's match was scheduled to be the Johnnies' home, outdoor opener at the Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville, but was moved indoors due to the expected wet weather.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-7, 4-2 MIAC) returned to the win column with an 8-1 victory over Hamline two weeks ago (April 1) at the Rogers Tennis Center.
SJU cruised to a 3-0 lead after doubles play and recorded three singles wins via the super-breaker. All three Johnnies with the super-breaker victories dropped their first set but fought back to earn the win: senior
Wil McDowell (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) at No. 1 (4-6, 6-3, 10-5); senior
Peyton Fischer (Spicer, Minn./Willmar) at No. 2 (3-6, 6-2, 10-4); and junior
Mark Rosen (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) at No. 6 (5-7, 6-2, 10-6).
The Pipers' lone win was at No. 3 singles. Senior
Hunter Fischer (Spicer, Minn./Willmar) and junior
Daniel Perez (Quito, Ecuador) posted straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively.
A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester (9-5, 5-1 MIAC) won its third-straight match with a 9-0 shutout of Bethel on Wednesday (April 12) in Arden Hills. The Scots are 10-4 each at Nos. 2-4 singles, as well as No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Jordan Doi leads the team with a 10-4 (5-1 MIAC) singles record, including a 7-4 mark at No. 3. Seniors Matthew Sullivan and Anton Korolev are both 9-4 (5-1 MIAC) and 7-4 at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The duo of Sullivan and sophomore Alec Sargent is 8-6 (5-1) at No. 1 doubles.Â
LAST YEAR: SJU suffered a 7-2 setback to Macalester last April 23 (2022) indoors at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Peyton Fischer had a racket in the two wins for SJU. He teamed up with sophomore
Ryan Will (Northfield, Minn.) for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 and won his singles match, also at No. 2, via the super-breaker: 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. The Scots won the other five singles matches in straight sets, including four sets with a seventh point.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 29-11 against the Scots on the tennis court since 1984, but have lost the last three meetings (two by 5-4 scores).
