MIAC Release
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Nine Saint John's University golf student-athletes received 2021-22 Winter and Spring Academic All-MIAC honors on Monday, June 27.
SJU led the MIAC with 145 male honorees during the 2021-22 academic year, followed by Gustavus Adolphus (134) and Carleton (113). The Johnnies had 86 fall honorees (cross country, football, soccer), ahead of Gustavus (80) and St. Olaf (67).
Those honored (listed alphabetically) include:
-Senior
Joe Abdo (Edina, Minn.), a communication major with a 3.81 GPA;
-Senior
Isaac Burgess (Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area), a nursing major with a 3.67 GPA;
-Sophomore
Thomas Ellis (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen), a biology major (pre-physician's assistant emphasis) with a 3.61 GPA;
-Junior
Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.), a social science major with a 3.86 GPA;
-Junior
Cameron Lemke (Avon, Minn./Albany), an accounting major with a 3.88 GPA;
-Sophomore
Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area), an accounting major with a 4.0 GPA;
-Sophomore
Jackson May (Monticello, Minn.), an economics and history double-major with a 3.91 GPA;
-Sophomore
Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.), a global business leadership major with a 3.62 GPA;
-Sophomore
Max Thelen (Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace), a global business leadership major with a 3.54 GPA.
Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale to qualify for Academic All-MIAC recognition. Transfers, like freshmen, must complete a full academic year to be eligible the following season.
Athletically, student-athletes must be a member of a MIAC-sponsored, varsity team and be academically and athletically eligible. The student-athlete must have utilized a season of participation (per NCAA and MIAC definitions) and have remained on the sports roster through the conclusion of the sports season.
The Academic All-MIAC honor is the second consecutive for Gutzmer and Loxtercamp earned the MIAC's Elite 22 Award for men's golf, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA among the All-MIAC honorees.
SJU won its second consecutive conference title (14th overall) Oct. 2-4 at the 2021 MIAC Championships, shooting 14-under-par over the three-day, 45-hole conference tournament. The win clinched the Johnnies' 19th appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., where SJU finished 26th out of 43 teams last month.
